Hoshin Kanri, a Japanese term for "compass management" or "direction" and "administration," is a methodology used in strategic planning by companies such as Toyota as part of Lean Management. The Hoshin Kanri X Matrix provides a tool to list and correlate objectives, priorities, metrics and goals all on a single page. It is also used for showing the people responsible for carrying out these objectives. See the references listed below for more information.

How to Use the X Matrix Template

We created this template with the objective of making it simple to customize. You can add and delete rows and columns as needed and there are no formulas.

For information about Hoshin Kanri in general and the principles behind the X Matrix tool, see the references below.

The X part of the X Matrix uses two line objects, so if they somehow get out of place, you can drag the ends to the corners of the cell while holding the ALT key to snap to the corners.

You can edit the Legend in the bottom right corner of the chart if you want to use other symbols besides the defaults in the template. The Data Validation drop-down boxes used in the corners of the matrix refer to the symbols in the legend, so if you change the legend, it will automatically change the symbols available in the drop-down boxes.

Avoid deleting rows in the Goals section at the bottom because doing so may delete part of the Legend.

If you need to add goals, insert rows above the last row in the chart (not below). If you need to add columns, insert columns within the middle of the left and right sections rather than either before or after each section. Doing this will help you avoid having to update border styles or redefine the print area.
